Pittsburgh is lucky in that it boasts numerous art museums and galleries. Enjoy pop art at The Andy Warhol Museum, contemporary art at the Mattress Factory, the extravagance of the Gilded Age at The Frick Pittsburgh and all forms modern craft from fiber arts to ceramics at Cotemporary Craft. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, operates several galleries downtown including SPACE and the Wood Street Galleries featuring primarily digital media, film, video, robotic and new media installations.
A wide variety of artworks can also be found at the world-renowned Carnegie Museum of Art. Through April 2, 2023, visitors have a unique opportunity to visit the 58th Carnegie International, the longest running North American exhibition of international art. Every three to four years, the Carnegie Museum of Art showcases the perspective of art and artists’ response to the issues of our time. This year, the theme for the exhibition is titled Is it morning for you yet? and unfolds along two conceptual overlapping currents: historical works from the collections of international institutions, estates, and artists, alongside new commissions and recent works by contemporary artists.
Learn about the legacy of one of Pittsburgh’s most celebrated sons, 20th century playwright August Wilson, at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. The AWAACC champions the Black experience in the United States through creative mediums and performances.
A wide array of performances can be found at the historic Benedum Center, including those of PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera and Pittsburgh CLO. The O’Reilly Theater, designed by world-renowned architect Michael Graves, is home to the Pittsburgh Public Theater and also the only downtown performance venue that features a thrust stage, surrounded by the audience on three sides.
The newly opened PNC Theater is home to the Pittsburgh Playhouse featuring local productions and up-in-coming performers. Located in the South Side is City Theatre Company, dedicated to bringing contemporary theater to Pittsburgh. A number of additional theaters, including the Kelly Strayhorn Theater, New Hazlett Theater and Harris Theater, adorn Pittsburgh’s 90 unique neighborhoods.
