Pittsburgh’s North Shore and North Side
Pittsburgh’s Premier Sports Destination
A quick ride on the “T” or a scenic walk from downtown Pittsburgh, the North Shore and North Side are must-visits for sports enthusiasts, museum lovers and everyone in between.
The North Shore is a hub for most things Pittsburgh sports, while the North Side features gorgeous parks and colorful streets, but both are home to some of the city’s most popular museums.
5 Must-Do Ways to Explore the Neighborhood
1. Explore the Mexican War Streets
No matter the weather, a walk through the Mexican War Streets is a must. Take in the vibrancy of Pittsburgh’s most colorful homes with a coffee from Commonplace Coffee in hand. You can also stop at a variety of museums in the area, like The Mattress Factory, Randyland, and the National Aviary.
2. Get There in Style
There are plenty of ways to get to the North Shore, but we highly recommend either walking or biking across a bridge from Downtown. There are plenty to choose from that will spit you out wherever you want to go along the Allegheny River. Bonus points if there’s a Pittsburgh Pirates game, because then the iconic Roberto Clemente Bridge is shut down and you can walk on its street.
3. Relax at Allegheny Commons Park
If you’re looking for a chill day, Allegheny Commons Park is right in the heart of the North Side. Stop for a picnic, set up a hammock, or simply take a walk through; whatever you choose, it’ll make a nice reset during your trip.
4. Catch a Game
Of course, the North Shore’s most iconic features are its stadiums. This neighborhood is home to both the Pittsburgh Steelers (Acrisure Stadium) and the Pittsburgh Pirates (PNC Park), as well as the Pitt Panthers football team. Experience the City of Champions for yourself on the North Shore no matter the season, and make sure to bring your Terrible Towel!
5. Visit a Museum
As mentioned, the North Shore and North Side are home to several museums that cater to whatever your niche.
Into contemporary art and not afraid to step out of your comfort zone? Head to The Mattress Factory, Randyland, Museum of Illusions, or the Andy Warhol Museum. Are you a diehard sports fan? Visit the Steelers Hall of Honor Museum inside Acrisure Stadium and track down the many plaques in the area showcasing some of the city’s most legendary moments on the field.
