The only of its kind, the National Aviary is home to more than 500 birds from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild.
Large walk-through habitats allow for close interactions between visitors and free-flying birds. Daily programs are educational and fun and offer many opportunities to hand-feed and meet species rarely found in zoos. Visitors can watch flamingos frolic; witness illusive owls spread their wings; hand feed a toucan; and hang out with a sloth.
Penguin Point, an open-air habitat that is home to a colony of playful penguins, affords close-up views of the penguins swimming, diving and basking in the sun. Visitors can even experience first-hand what it’s like to fly like a bird in a new full-body, bird flight simulator!
The Helen M. Schmidt FliteZone™ Theater offers daily free-flight shows to visitors. Vultures, macaws, owls and other birds fly overhead or stroll among seated guests against a background of theatrical music, lighting and video. Seasonal rooftop theater, SkyDeck, allows guests the remarkable experience of watching birds of prey hunting demonstrations in the skies above Pittsburgh.
Hours: Daily, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Open New Year's Eve.
