Recently Released

Working: What We Do All Day

Watch on Netflix. This documentary, helmed by President Obama, explores the every day lives of workers in various industries across the U.S. The film trailer includes two Pittsburgh-area workers and showcases the work of Aurora, a technology company that is pushing what's possible with self-driving vehicles.

A Man Called Otto

Watch in Theatres. Tom Hanks was a highlight of Pittsburgh in the spring of 2022 when he returned to Pittsburgh and delighted wedding guests and local businesses alike. Hanks has previously shown Pittsburgh the love with his award-winning portrayal of Fred Rogers in 2019's "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," and this remake set in the Burgh is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Mayor of Kingstown Season 2

Watch on Paramount+. While the first season was shot primarily in Canada, season two of the Jeremy Renner-led thriller has been sighted filming in the Northside and Strip District.

The Pale Blue Eye

Watch on Netlix. Is there any better combination than actor Christian Bale, director Scott Cooper and Pittsburgh? It's the second time the three have combined ("Out of the Furnace," 2013) and the third Bale/Pittsburgh collab (The Dark Knight Rises - 2012). This murder mystery, with major scenes shot at the Compass Inn Museum near Ligonier and Allegheny Cemetery, is now available on Netflix.

Dear Zoe

Watch On Demand. 2022 was absolutely the year of Sadie Sink. The "Stranger Things" star carried both the season and Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill on the charts, and now she finally carries a movie entirely on her own.

Adapted by Pittsburgher Melissa Martin and Pittsburgh native Marc Lhormer from the Pittsburgh-based novel, Dear Zoe lands in local theaters and on video-on-demand platforms Friday, Nov. 4. Sadie and the rest of the cast filmed throughout the Pittsburgh region, including Squirrel Hill, the Strip District, Braddock and Kennywood. More information at dearzoemovie.com.

Cha Cha Real Smooth

Watch on Apple TV+. A Sundance film festival darling, this coming-of-age story has topped a lot of people's best films of 2022 lists. Although set in New Jersey, The Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills is heavily featured in the movie along with Kasa The Maverick hotel and the Bethel Park Community Center.

Anything's Possible

Watch on Prime Video. More than any other film on this list, "Anything's Possible" makes Pittsburgh a character in the movie, with well-known set pieces happening at recognizable locations across the city. Pittsburgh native and CMU grad Billy Porter directed the romantic comedy that you'll need a notebook for to keep track of all the Pittsburgh references. The Point, the skyline, Phipps Conservatory, The Andy Warhol Museum, Roberto Clemente Bridge the Duquesne Incline; they're all there along with tons of references to the city's history in the dialogue as well.

A League of Their Own

Watch on Prime Video. If you build it, they will come. I know that's the wrong baseball movie, but that premise is what helped Pittsburgh land the new "A League of Their Own" adaptation released summer 2022. The CCAC Boyce campus received a whole new ballpark out of the deal that is now their home field! Other Pittsburgh locations to keep an eye out for are the Carrie Blast Furnaces and Benedum Center, and eagle-eyed viewers should be able to pick out the stretch of South Side that was brilliantly converted into a 1940s location.

The Andy Warhol Diaries

Watch on Netflix. Dive into the purposefully unknowable personal life of Andy Warhol through his diaries (recited by a Warhol Foundation-approved AI recreating his voice) and those that knew him best. This series shot extensively in The Andy Warhol Museum and spent a lot of time in the archives and speaking to curators to make sure they captured Andy as faithfully as possible.

Sprung

Watch on Freevee. The newest filmed-in-Pittsburgh series, "Sprung" brings the offbeat comedies of Greg Garcia ("My Name is Earl", "Raising Hope") to the Burgh. There are dozens of Pittsburgh locations featured in the show from Downtown landmarks to suburbs and rural locations, making this a wonderful snapshot of the greater Pittsburgh region.

Coming Soon

Drive-Away Dolls

Sept. 22, 2023. What a special film this will be. Ethan Coen (of the acclaimed Coen Brothers) steps into the spotlight for his first solo film, which he shot right here in Pittsburgh in Sept. 2022.

Rustin

In theatres Nov. 3 and on Netflix Nov. 17, 2023. This is probably the upcoming film I'm most excited for. George C. Wolfe returns to Pittsburgh with essentially his entire cast of 2021's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" for this biopic of gay civil rights champion Bayard Rustin.

The Deliverance

Netflix - 2023. Lee Daniels' newest film, with a loaded cast led by Mo'Nique and Glenn Close, also filmed in Pittsburgh with crews shutting down roads throughout McKees Rocks. Look for this horror film sometime in 2023 on the streaming giant.

American Rust Season 2

Freevee. It's been a tumultuous year for "American Rust," but fans rejoiced when the canceled Showtime show was acquired by Freevee and renewed for a second season. While the distributor may have changed, Pittsburgh is once again the home for this series, with season two shooting in late 2022.
