Know Before You Go: Pittsburgh International Airport
The Pittsburgh International Airport recently underwent a $1.4 billion transformation, making it a new experience for new visitors and frequent flyers alike.
So, what do you need to know before embarking in one of Pittsburgh's newest crown jewels? We've got everything to keep in mind when flying in, flying out, or stopping by for a drop off or pick up.
New at PIT
With the new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport comes a new look, of course, but the makeover goes beyond what you see on the surface. From the art decorating the walls to the ceiling mimicking stars, the new terminal will surprise you at every turn. One of the most charming things I found at the new terminal awaits you at baggage claim: bright luggage with thought bubbles that cute messages (I wish I could describe this better, but you'll just have to check them out yourselves).
But of course, we wouldn't be Pittsburgh if we didn't honor our past. That's why the iconic Franco Harris statue now sits in its own dedicated spot in arrivals. It's surrounded by art of the Immaculate Reception (more art can be found throughout the entire terminal, both in on-screen animations and wall decor). Also returning is some of the favorite retail stores and food stops essential for your trip in and out of the Steel City, like Primanti Brothers, Burgh Sportz Bar, Gaby et Jules, and Penn Brewery. Other essential locations include the pet relief area (post-security terminal, concourse), Interfaith Reflection Room (post-security terminal, mezzanine), and Presley's Place Sensory Sensitivities Room (post-security terminal, concourse).
If you're flying in...
Welcome! We're so excited to have you in the City of Champions. This new airport is your first taste of Pittsburgh before you head out into our streets, so take it in! There's plenty to do, see, experience while you're waiting for your ride or hotel check-in. No one wants to be stuck in an airport, but trust me when I say this new terminal is one I would gladly get lost in.
Brush Up on Your Pittsburgh Knowledge: Whether you're in town to see family for the holidays or just coming for a weekend away, whether you've never been here or you're coming back home, there's something new to learn about the city everywhere you look. To get an idea of an itinerary or to see what's going on while you're here, stop by the VisitPITTSBURGH Welcome Center on the arrivals floor. Pick up an Insider's Guide or See & Do Guide and get your trip started with us; we're happy to help!
Getting a Ride: Whether you prefer public transit, driving yourself, carpooling with a friend, or grabbing a rideshare, there are so many ways to get around. A 25-minute drive from Downtown Pittsburgh, the airport is located in the area of Moon and Coraopolis townships. But wherever you're in the city or beyond, leaving the airport doesn't have to be a hassle. Pittsburgh Regional Transit offers a one way fare to and from the airport that picks passengers up from around the city. You can get a rental car from several companies right across the street from the lower level of the new terminal (between the new terminal and the parking garage). There's also a Free Wait Lot where your ride can wait for you to arrive, with the first hour being free.
Food, Drinks, & Shopping: Sometimes airline food just isn't enough, especially after a long flight. It's a good thing Pittsburgh International Airport has a plethora of stops to keep you occupied before you board. Treat yourself to good coffee and a great view from local business Café Conmigo, grab a bite on-the-go from The Strip Market, or enjoy a milkshake from Shake Shack, which is new at the new terminal. You can also get your Pittsburgh swag and try out the zombie dodgeball simulator (you read that right) in the back of Duquesne Supply Co.
Where to Stay: If you don't have your lodging situation sorted out, we've got you covered. Pittsburgh boasts a good collection of quality hotels sure to serve as the focal point for all of your adventures. Of course, there's the Hyatt Regency at Pittsburgh International Airport, which is convenient for your travel needs and doesn't skip out on the quality. If you're looking to get out more, we recommend staying at The Oaklander, William Omni Penn, or Kimpton Hotel Monaco, just to name a few. Here's a list of hotels from around the area.
Overall, we hope you have fun in the Steel City! For more tips, tricks, and everything you need to see and experience while you're here, check out our blog.
If you're flying out...
The new terminal has made catching a flight at PIT more streamlined. Whether you're like me and like to arrive at the airport for your flight an obscene amount of hours early for your trip, or you missed your alarm and are frantically checking how long the TSA line is on your way in, be sure to take a breath or two to admire the modernized marvel crews have been working on for years. One of my favorite features is the new bridge that connects the security checkpoint to the new terminal, especially the art that greats you as you enter.

Parking: When you get in, there are plenty of parking options for whatever your trip entails. The shuttle lot is my go-to, with shuttles that circle around from the lot to the terminal every few minutes and can get you where you need to go in 10 minutes. Plus, it's the cheapest option, with rates starting at $8 a day. Every other parking option is a mere 3-5 minute walk to the terminal, including the terminal lot, terminal garage (which is nearly connected to the new terminal), and PIT executive, which you need a reservation for.
Food, Drinks, & Shopping: I get it, waiting for your flight can sometimes drag, especially those early morning flights. It's a good thing Pittsburgh International Airport has a plethora of stops to keep you occupied before you board. Stop for a drink at Wigle Whiskey, pick up a book for your flight at Hudson Bookstore, or get your Pittsburgh swag and try out the zombie dodgeball simulator (you read that right) in the back of Duquesne Supply Co.
And this is just the start! With new businesses coming in, outdoor spaces being built, and final touches being finalized, the new Pittsburgh International Airport terminal is continuously evolving and looking toward the future.
Welcome to Pittsburgh, we can't wait for you to see what we have in store!
