An Enticing, Enlightening, September-and-Beyond 2026 Culture Calendar

Where and how to get informed & inspired in the months ahead

As schools open, pools close and the evening light begins to fall a little differently each day, we’re gearing up for autumnal coziness, culture and fun now that we’ve entered the months ending in “-ber.” The options to feel inspired and uplifted are aplenty as we head into this season, but here are a few upcoming events currently catching our eye. (And here are even more ideas shared in this recent post!)

THE CONCERT CIRCUIT

While the city awaits the grand opening of Citizens Live at the Wylie, other big-venue productions happen at PPG, like Kacey Musgraves (September 8), Olivia Rodrigo (September 29 and 30) and The Red Stray Clays bringing their largest tour to date here (October 1), with support from The Revivalists.

More intimate gatherings happen at beloved Lawrenceville gathering spot, Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall; catch captivating storyteller/singer/songwriter John Craigie (September 10) and Whitney (on the Small Talk Tour) with Emma Ogier (September 15). In Millvale, spend the night inside the soaring spaces of Mr. Smalls, a repurposed 18th-century church, that welcomes Margaret Glaspy (September 18), Nation of Language (September 21), Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals (September 26), The Linda Lindas with special guest Deux Visages (October 2) and dazzling showman Low Cut Connie (October 22).

Stage AE keeps summer vibes going strong with Sam Barber, Josiah and the Bonnevilles and Wild Horses (September 22), Ohio folk talents with vibrant stage presence Caamp (September 25), MUNA on their Gets So Hot Tour (September 29) and Beach House (September 30).

BROADWAY IN PITTSBURGH

The PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh series, presented by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, remains an anchor of the city’s arts scene, and this fall’s line-up promises to entice once again. Catch The Notebook The Musical November 10 through 15 at the Benedum Center, before gearing up for festive offerings. For example, usher in the holidays with one of the season’s most loveable curmudgeons who’s on stage at Benedum between November 24 and 29 during Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! — another musical performance. The downtown venue also comes to life on November 19 with the DRUMLine Live Holiday Spectacular and on November 28, thanks to the Jim Brickman: A Christmas Celebration LIVE!

THEATRE TALK

The most recent buzz comes from the announcement that, after more than 130 combined years of shaping the city’s professional theater scene together, Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Public Theater will become one entity with a singular name — the Confluence Theater of Pittsburgh. They’ve already revealed their first three shows.

In Braddock, barebones productions presents “Ulster American” by David Ireland between October 8 (preview night) and 25. Founder and artistic director Patrick Jordan says he can't wait for audiences to experience the savagely funny roller coaster ride provided by this play about the Northern Irish Troubles. “It’s provocative, profane, at times uncomfortable, but very, very funny,” he says. “It satirizes ego, privilege and identity politics and the particular kind of self-righteousness that comes from being absolutely certain you’re one of the good guys.”

Jordan likes to think that audiences are now accustomed to each barebones show being different from the last, and he promises “Ulster American” will be the same. “We have an amazing cast assembled; it will be a great night out and it will definitely leave you with something to talk about,” he says.

If preparing for your first night out at Braddocks’ barebones black box, Jordan promises you’ll discover an experience unlike any other. “First, you enter across the street from Andrew Carnegie's first steel mill,” he explains. “If you get there early, you should pop in to our neighboring restaurant, Braddock Public House for a great meal, cocktail or their award-winning Brew Gentleman beer. Then walk up the ramp to the black box and see a play that I can assure you, you will not see anywhere else.”

On the South Side at City Theatre, the 2026/2027 season opens with “In Clay,” after its sold-out run at D.C.’s Signature Theater. From September 19 through October 11, you can catch this “tenacious and captivating” solo musical based on the true story of overlooked, early 20th-century ceramic artist Marie-Berthe Cazin.

"When I saw the production of In Clay at Signature last spring, I fell in love with it, and I think Pittsburgh audiences will too," says Artistic Director Clare Drobot. "The whole show is gorgeous—it's a richly complex portrayal of what it is to be a woman and an artist. The score is dynamic, as is the incredible team behind it, making it the perfect way to open our season."

Quantum Theatre continues taking spectators on a journey around town, by constantly switching up their locale. This time, they transition from staging a production at Carrie Blast Furnace, where “The Tempest” played this summer, to Rockwell park, where “radio island” arrives between October 23 and November 14. In this work written by Liza Birkenmeier and directed by Katie Brook, Siovhan Christensen stars as an international hostage negotiator who returns to her childhood home.

MIND-STRETCHING FUN

Opportunities to learn abound in this constantly curious city, whether you join a community photo walk with Bodega Film Lab and crew, or brush up on your dance skills with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

You may think of The Frick as a site only known for inspiring art (don’t miss French Moderns before it closes October 11), film screenings and educational conversations, perhaps enjoyed with cocktail or mocktail in hand. Yet we’ve learned it can also be a rejuvenating and restorative space in which to immerse yourself in the magic of a crystal bowl sound bath, held amid the hues of autumn. Sign up for the Symphony of Nature Concert: Fall Sound Bath Concert on September 29 at 6 p.m., a 75-minute experience followed by a brief Q&A with sound healer and musician Brooke Smokelin.

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden gets in on the educational action, too, with events like their October 15 botany walk-and-talk focused on plants with fall color, garlic and seasonal products. In any season, opportunities to learn abound at Phipps whether you’re wanting to rev up your gardening skills or refine your skills in the kitchen. And new this season, you can “go down the rabbit hole” with their Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland-themed course that celebrates the curiouser and curiouser elements of nature. Think candle-making on Friday, September 25, or talk a herbal plant ID walk Tuesday, September 29.

On October 14, the Phipps Dinner in a Pumpkin class allows Chef Emily Larsen to take attendees back to the 17th century with this seasonal treat and throwback recipe.

PALATE PLEASERS

For more delicious memory-making, enjoy a communal fall meal at Churchview Farms (more dates released soon; be sure to jump on them quickly!), or a three-course feast at downtown’s The Commoner during their interactive “Clue Mystery Dinner.” Gather your friends, and test out your detective skills between October 23 through November 1; reservation details will be available soon.

You can also eat your heart at the Pittsburgh debut of Panda Fest, one of the country’s largest outdoor Asian food and culture fests. The vibrant gathering comes to the Station Square East Lot Parking from September 18 through 20, bringing a 15-foot-high inflatable panda, more than 800 Asian street food vendors (representing cuisines from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and other countries), plus crafts (like sugar painting, paper cutting and calligraphy), demos and live performances ranging from lion dances to K-pop numbers.

READING SEASON

It’s our favorite time of year to curl up with a good book — and then, when we’re lucky, listen to the wisdom of whomever assembled its beautiful words. Thanks to the Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures 10 Evenings series, our city welcomes talents like Mary Roach October 5, Michael Lewis October 26 and Min Jin Lee November 26.

Other special events grace the Carnegie’s beautiful Oakland venue, too, like Pulitzer Prize-winning Barbara Kingsolver speaking with Anna Singer on October 29. As the lauded author of 10 bestselling works of fiction, Kingsolver's new novel Partita touches on topics like class barriers, the risks of ambition and the life-changing power of art. Aligning with that theme, faculty members and students from the CMU School of Music will join the October evening to fill the storied hall with their melodies.

Those with young readers will want to check out six free Words & Pictures lectures presented by Shady Side Academy (and held at 6 p.m.). They’re held in the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, as well as being available later to watch on the Arts & Lectures’ YouTube channel.

OLD FAVORITES GRACING THE STAGE

Get your musical fix at Greer Cabaret Theater when “Rent” brings its familiar characters and stage numbers to town September 24 through October 18.

In another nod to nostalgia, savor a refreshing step back in time amongst Bottlerocket’s dark panel walls and analog TV screens. In any month, the cozy, old-school venue brings comedy and musical acts to its welcoming space. Soon, the Needle Drop series showcases Terry Radshaw (September 19) performing Steely Dan’s debut album, Can’t Buy a Thrill — one of the foundational works of the yacht rock genre.

The venue just shared very exciting news, too. After more than a year and a half of searching, their team landed on the site they’ll call home for their second Bottlework iteration, this time in Seattle, Washington. (Alaska Airlines flies there directly, if you’re looking for an excuse to visit the Emerald City!) Bottlerocket Seattle is being built in the basement of the renowned Crocodile, once a homebase for grunge legends like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

ON THE BIG SCREEN

Movie lovers, take note: the SCREENSHOT Asian Film Fest (September 16 to 23) shows twelve features and 10 short films that explore various Asian cultures and experiences at the Harris Theater and on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

On the Northside, animal lovers will delight in the latest IMAX work to gallop across the Kamin Science Center‘s screen. “Horse Power,” a 3D, 42-minute-long film narrated by Josh Brolin, explores the touching bond between humans and their oldest companion. Playing through October 31, the movie celebrates the extraordinary abilities of horses and their human counterparts across the globe. The film also dives into horses’ remarkable biology and behavior that make horses such wonderful athletes and friends.

On September 10 at 7:30 p.m., The Plaza at North Shore continues their free movie series with Harry Potter Night @ The Plaza. Organizers encourage guests to wear their finest robes, hats and House scarves; The Plaza will be awarding gift cards and prizes for best- dressed participants throughout the night.

And September 26 at 7:30 p.m. means big-screen zaniness, as the Rocky Horror Picture Show Anniversary Screening takes over the plaza — in celebration of the esteemed life of actor Tim Curry and the 51st anniversary date of the initial U.S. release of this cult classic. The evening is complete with treat bags, performances and other surprises.

Looking for more Halloween fun? Throughout the month of October, the creative team behind the ScareHouse brand is partnering with The Plaza at North Shore to present Halloween Hangout – an epic destination that will feature haunted experiences, events, movies, themed food and drink from SugarBird, family-friendly trick-or-treating, happy hours and more. Free and ticketed experiences will take place throughout the season, so stay tuned.
