2 New Music Venues Will Soon Liven Up the Pittsburgh Scene

Your guide to making the most of the rest of summer while planning ahead for end-of-year fun.

Pittsburgh’s culture has been shining through in fun and quirky ways this summer. There were pickle-centric cocktails temporarily available at downtown hangouts (the Spritzery pop-up, Space Bar) and themed Pirates games like Yinzerpalooza, featuring giveaways like the coveted Dr. Robby bobblehead doled out to the first 20,000 attendees. If you’re still in the market for a bobblehead, be one of the first 21,000 fans at the game on Tuesday, September 15, to bring home a mini version of hometown hero Roberto Clemente.

Music has filled our fields and amphitheatres all summer long, with the luckiest artists (like Lisa Loeb and O.A.R) receiving perfect-10 weather on the evening they hit the stage. We’ve been especially happy to learn of sweet, unique collaborations this month like one between the Black Keys (who played Stage AE Monday, August 3) and The Peach Truck, which allowed fruit-loving Yinzers to pick up juicy treats for themselves ahead of time. (We discovered that band members have been friends of The Peach Truck for years, so the connection felt natural for everyone involved. They say this partnership celebrates something bigger than peaches or music, and is about “preserving and sharing the traditions that make the South so special.”)

LOOKING TO AN ARTS-FILLED SEASON AHEAD

Never fear, plenty of concerts are still left in the season, including those that are free. A few other shows topping our radar include: Zac Brown Band: Love & Fear Tour August 13 at PPG Paints Arena with Old Crow Medicine Show, who in June released their new album called Union Made. PPG also welcomes Kacey Musgraves (September 8), Olivia Rodrigo (September 29 and 30) and The Red Stray Clays (October 1). Then there are happenings at Thunderbird, from rising singer/songwriter Solya (September 4) to captivating storyteller/singer/songwriter John Craigie (September 10). Mr. Smalls welcomes Margaret Glaspy (September 18) and Nation of Language (September 21), while Stage AE brings in Sierra Ferrell and Seattle folk/Americana band The Brudi Brothers (September 1) plus Ohio folk talents Caamp (September 25).

As we look ahead, the coming months will see us slowly filling calendars with indoor fun, too — from concerts and lectures to story slams and comedy shows (hello…Golden Girls!). And in very exciting second-half-of-2026 news, there will be several brand-new venues ready to welcome us in in the months to come.

WELCOMING CITIZENS LIVE AT THE WYLIE

By October, there will be a new, 4,000-capacity venue in town, and there’s much buzz around its opening. Tom Loudermilk, Pittsburgh Market President, Live Nation, says that Citizens Live at The Wylie will fill an important gap in Pittsburgh’s live music ecosystem as the only year-round, indoor venue of its size. “That flexibility will help grow the city’s music scene and attract touring artists who may not previously have had the right place to perform here,” he predicts.

The venue is being touted as an investment in the Lower Hill. Loudermilk says it’s projected to generate $66 million in annual economic impact, create around 350 permanent jobs and support neighborhood residents, businesses and cultural institutions through several long-term community commitments.

There’s been talk of a venue like this for a decade, since Pittsburgh has always had passionate music fans and a vibrant concert scene. Loudermilk believes there’s been a need for a purpose-built, indoor venue of this size. Citizens Live at The Wylie was created to fulfill that while investing in one of the city's most historic neighborhoods.

From the beginning, the vision was to create more than just another concert venue. We wanted to build a destination that attracts world-class artists, creates memorable experiences for fans and honors the rich musical heritage of the Lower Hill District.

Loudermilk also adds how rewarding it’s been to watch that vision take shape over the past few years.

The venue’s been called a physical homage to an iconic era of Pittsburgh hospitality and nightlife, since the Lower Hill District once played an incredible role in shaping Pittsburgh's musical identity. Some of the greatest jazz musicians in history performed here, and the neighborhood was known for its vibrant scene and sense of community.

“We want guests to feel connected to the history of the neighborhood while experiencing a modern venue that will help write Pittsburgh's next chapter in live entertainment,” Loudermilk says. That history is reflected throughout the building with artwork, historic imagery and references to iconic neighborhood landmarks. And thanks to a partnership with the Carnegie Museum of Art, works from the Charles “Teenie” Harris Archive can also be seen in the venue.

So what to expect as a first-time visitor? “From the moment fans arrive, we want every part of the experience to feel seamless and memorable,” Loudermilk says. Fans can take in a show from the general admission floor, seated balcony, premium suites or in exclusive hospitality spaces. A rooftop lounge offers views of downtown Pittsburgh, while the Vinyl Room is an intimate listening lounge inspired by Japanese high-fidelity listening bars that features a curated record collection, chef-driven fare and creative cocktails.

“Together, these spaces are designed to make a concert feel like a full night out,” Loudermilk says. “At the end of the day, we want people to remember not only the artist they saw, but the experience they had.”

He’s personally impressed by just how much thought went into honoring the neighborhood, which will be visible in nods to the Hill District's musical legacy woven throughout the spaces. Yet all the conveniences and technology expected of a modern entertainment venue will be present too. The premium hospitality spaces have been designed as “destinations,” they say, whether folks gather here pre-show or simply soak in the atmosphere throughout the evening.

A venue of this size can offer great versatility, which is reflected in the opening calendar. On the roster so far, you’ll find artists spanning hip-hop, rock, pop, country, R&B, metal and comedy. Think Wiz Khalifa (October 2), Foster the People (October 4), Chelsea Handler (October 9), Boyz II Men (October 16) and Smokey Robinson (October 23), and that’s only a sampling of what’s already booked.

Loudermilk can’t wait for that first moment when the lights dim and thousands of fans get to experience this venue together. “You can design a building and plan a concert,” he says, “but it's the connection between artists and audiences that brings it to life.”

He adds that that's what Citizens Live at The Wylie is all about — “creating a place where fans can feel close to the music, artists can connect with the crowd and Pittsburgh has a venue that will create unforgettable memories for decades to come.”

MAKING MUSIC MAGIC AT MIC DROP

On the North Shore, a new nightlife destination called Mic Drop will bring 4,321 square feet in which to enjoy live entertainment, music, craft cocktails and what developers have described as “elevated social experiences.” It’s set to open by the end of the year.

Herky Pollock, president and CEO of Legacy Hospitality Partners, says the idea for this concept has been an evolution. Above all, he and his team strongly believe the North Shore has become the preeminent entertainment district east of the Chicago. “We are seeing more and more customers craving live entertainment,” he says. “We are leaning heavily into this niche and offering different forms of live music.”

Mic Drop will be a fully immersive experience, he promises. “One day you will be a performer, and the next you will be the audience.” It will be a place to play both night and day, and to “let loose in a fun, experiential way.”

Compared to other venues around town, this one will stand out for its mix of offerings, from “bandeoke” and karaoke to dueling pianos and live performances. Everyone can get involved; various forms of participatory entertainment will happen throughout the month.

“We will have day parties so that you can party in the day and be home by 10,” Pollock says. “We will also have parties for late night. There will be something for everyone,”

So what part brings Pollock the most excitement? “Bandeoke,” he says. “You will be the star in your own band. Who wouldn’t want to do that?”

He adds that Mic Drop will be the perfect complement to recently-opened SugarBird, The Plaza at North Shore and the soon-to-be-opened Highball Social Club, as well as their expansion of Shorty’s. As a huge proponent of all things related to this city, Pollock says, “We could not possibly be more bullish on Pittsburgh and the North Shore.”
