Shovels and Rope
Shovels & Rope is the Charleston, South Carolina-based husband-and-wife duo of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. Their music combines folk, country, blues and rock with raw, harmony-driven songwriting and a stripped-down two-person approach. The duo broke through with O’ Be Joyful, which includes the song “Birmingham,” named Song of the Year at the 2013 Americana Music Honors & Awards; Shovels & Rope also received that year’s Emerging Artist award. Their catalog includes Swimmin’ Time, Little Seeds, By Blood and Manticore, showcasing their range from intimate ballads to energetic roots-rock.
