Sean Jones & Friends: Miles @ 100
A Fundraiser for Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival
As we build toward the 16th edition of the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, we are raising critical funds to expand access and amplify the cultural impact that has made PIJF one of the nation’s premier jazz festivals. This year’s festival will celebrate the music of Our America250 and spotlight the powerful influence of jazz, soul, blues, folk, R&B, and hip hop on the soundtrack of American culture and the artists who continue to move that legacy forward.
Few artists embody that spirit of evolution and creative reinvention more profoundly than Miles Davis. Often referred to as "The Picasso of Jazz," Davis refused to remain confined to a single sound, style, or era. Across decades, he continuously transformed his music, helping shape the cool jazz movement, hard bop, jazz fusion, and the future sounds that would later influence R&B, funk, hip hop, and contemporary music culture. His artistry reflected the ever-changing story of America itself: bold, innovative, layered, and constantly evolving. As the world approaches the centennial of his birth, his music remains timeless, his influence undeniable, and his spirit a lasting force in the evolution of global music and culture.
Jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer, educator, and activist Sean Jones has long been influenced by the music and vision of Miles Davis. Jones has toured with members of Davis’s legendary ensembles, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Marcus Miller, and honored Davis’s legacy with his acclaimed "Tribute to Miles" performances. He has shared that Davis’s 1989 album Amandla profoundly impacted him as a young musician and helped shape the course of his artistic journey. On June 23, Sean Jones and an all-star ensemble of supreme musicians will celebrate the centennial of Miles Davis’s birth with a powerful evening honoring one of the most influential artists in American history. Proceeds from this special concert will benefit the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival and support education and community programs that inspire the next generation of artists and audiences.
