Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra: Lincoln Portrait
To express the spirit and founding principles of our country, Aaron Copland selected Abraham Lincoln as his subject. Together with Copland’s unapologetically American music (written for the “Common Man”; the democratic foundation of this country), Lincoln’s words articulate the American ideal we must not forget and strive to uphold, every day, even in times of great darkness. This powerful piece headlines a concert of all-American music with works by Bernstein, Joan Tower, and John Adams, a setting of excerpts from American poet Walt Whitman about his experience as a hospital volunteer during the American Civil War.
