Indiana County Tourist Bureau
Indiana County, PA has a few famous connections to American history, including George Clymer (a signer of both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution), who donated land for Indiana to become the county seat, and Jimmy Stewart, a Hollywood icon and military hero. Today, there is a museum in downtown Indiana honoring Mr. Stewart’s life and accomplishments.
Preserving and promoting Indiana County’s rich history are several historical organizations & museums. For example, the Historical & Genealogical Society of Indiana County (HGSIC) focuses on county-wide history while the Blairsville Area, Homer-Center,Saltsburg Area and Smicksburg Area Historical Societies highlight their specific town history. For extensive exhibits on Indiana County’s involvement with the underground railroad, be sure to visit the Blairsville Underground Railroad History Center. At one time, there were more than 48 covered bridges within the county. Now, the four remaining covered bridges are all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
