PGH Book Fest

Established in 2022, Pgh Book Fest is chock-full of authors, poets, events and workshops for readers of all ages! Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Oakland branch hosts the Pgh Book Fest, and it's truly the perfect hub for all things literary. The Festival is FREE and brings together readers of all ages for a day of author talks, poetry readings, workshops, local booksellers, literary exhibitors and vendors, and much more.

The Great Pittsburgh Book Crawl

The Great Pittsburgh Book Crawl is held once a year, with dozens of participating stores scattered throughout the city and beyond. A book crawl encourages you to stop and visit participating stores during the dates of the crawl and shop their inventory. At each stop you can get a passport book stamped showing that you have visited that location (passport books are available for free at each participating location). Get enough stamps and you’ll be entered to win a raffle prize put together by all the stores.

This queer, woman-owned romance-only bookstore can be found right across the street from Allegheny Cemetery. While Pittsburgh's other romance-exclusive bookstore, Passionate Pages, focuses more on romantasy and popular romance titles, The Shelf Love Society puts the spotlight on diverse, queer, and indie voices.

City of Asylum Bookstore | 40 W North Avenue (North Side)
This bookstore has something for everyone. One-part bookstore, one-part restaurants, one-part dedicated writer space, and one-part performance space, City of Asylum is a haven for those looking to dive between the pages of their current read, or write their own story others can dive into instead.

Little Green Bookstore |104 N Main Street (Zelienople)
Little Green Bookstore is around 40 minutes north of the city, but it's so worth the drive. This used bookstore is tucked away in the quaint town of Zelienople, offering a natural pause to your walk through the downtown area.

A queer-owned independent bookstore in Carnegie, a quick drive just south of the city, Woolly Bear got its name because owner Mike Ploetz wanted a mascot he could stick a smiley face on. If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about how cute this store is, we don't know what will.

Book Clubs You Should Join or Stop By

Silent Book Club | Various
This is the book club that you can find this author at every month. Designed like silent reading time when you were in school, this book club is perfect for those who don't like assigned reading. At Silent Book Club, you're encouraged to bring whatever book you want in whatever medium you want - that includes audiobooks, comic books, Kindles, and more - and talk about them before diving into an hour of silent reading. This movement is happening all throughout the country and has really picked up traction over the last few years; I've been going to mine since 2023. Plus, there are about a dozen different Silent Book Clubs in Pittsburgh, so you can go to the one closest to you.

Welcome to Pages & Pour Book Club Pittsburgh! BookTok is wild and it feels like everyone is always looking for a book club to join, hence why this book club was created in 2023! This club meets throughout the city at various different restaurants and bars, so keep an eye on the club's Instagram for that month's book and location.

Page Turners Book Club | Bakery Square
Page Turners Book Club is a free, women's community book club. They meet once a month to talk books, try a new craft, support local businesses, and make new friends!

Commonplace Coffee | 1501 Buena Vista Street (North Side)
Commonplace Coffee has several locations throughout the city, but the location in the North Side's Mexican War Streets is this author's personal favorite. With a rustic vibe, Mason jars for cups, and pastries that will make you want seconds, this corner coffee shop is like a treat at the end of your busy day or the perfect beginning to an adventure.

La Prima Espresso Company | 205 21st Street (Strip District) & 1100 Smallman Street (Downtown)
La Prima is a go-to for those craving an authentic coffee taste but have a bit of a sweet tooth. If you plan to hang out for a while, head to the Downtown location; otherwise, we cannot recommend the Strip District spot enough. This counter-service shop is always packed, but we promise the wait is worth the taste. Plus, this location is attached to a restaurant that serves Italian baked goods, paninis, and cafe-style foods, so it really is your one-stop shop for a coffee and quick bites.

Located in the heart of Pittsburgh's historic Strip District, Allegheny Coffee & Tea Exchange is your location for some of the best coffee in the ‘burgh.

De Fer Coffee & Tea is an employee owned and operated specialty coffee company with five cafes in Pittsburgh, but the Strip District location is this author's favorite. A loft-style observation area is the perfect spot for you to read and people watch all day.

Afters Cafe | 1931 Murray Avenue (Squirrel Hill)
The cozy cafe serving espresso all day long! Afters Cafe is more than just a coffee shop - it's your one-stop shop for late night caffeine and a cozy place to hunker down with a book for the day.

Parks That Are Perfect to Read In

Schenley Park | Oakland
Created in 1889 with land donated by heiress Mary Schenley the park now contains 456 acres of trails, woods, and attractions. Grab your picnic gear and your book and catch the sunset on Flagstaff Hill.

Allegheny Commons Park | North Side
Allegheny Commons has anchored the North Side for over 150 years. The public commons predate the City of Pittsburgh's annexation of Allegheny City. This treasured Victorian gem is our oldest park and recalls the grandeur of Central Park.

Mellon Park | Shadyside
The Mellon Park Walled Garden allows you to step back into the gilded age. The Garden was part of the original Mellon Estate and served as their "back yard". The plantings - many of which are original hardscapes - feature flowering trees, shrubs, and perennials. The Garden's Japanese Stewarita tree is not native to our area.

Frick Park | Point Breeze
Frick Park is an ideal escape from the noise of the city. Known as Pittsburgh’s woodland park for its extensive trails throughout steep valleys and wooded slopes.

Point State Park | Downtown
Point State Park sits at the confluence of Pittsburgh's Three Rivers. The triangular plot of land at the tip of "The Golden Triangle" is a significant place Pittsburgh's story and the birthplace of our community. It is a gathering place for Pittsburgh's residents, the County, and the Commonwealth for grand civic events, and is a point of pride in our region.

If you're coming for a day, you'll want to make it two. If you're coming for longer, you'll want to make sure you're staying at the right place for you. Luckily, Pittsburgh is filled with world-class hotels and resorts that can act as your home base, whether right in the heart of the action or outside of the bustling downtown areas.

Getting Around

Finding your way around a new place can be stressful, but it won't be here. Take the Duquesne Incline or Monongahela Incline up and down Mt. Washington for breathtaking views of the city and a journey to the shops on Shiloh Street, hop on a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus for cheap, or take the "T" light rail system - which is free between Downtown and the North Side - for a hassle-free adventure.
