Student STEAM Itinerary (3-day)
Day 1: Science and Discovery
Carnegie Museum of Natural History | Morning
Start the trip with an immersive experience at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, home to one of the world’s best dinosaur collections.
- Explore paleontology, learning how fossils are excavated and studied.
- The Earth Sciences exhibit provides hands-on opportunities to investigate geology, mineral formations, and the science behind natural disasters.
- The Anthropology Hall, students will engage in discussions about early human technology, evolution, and archaeology.
Carnegie Science Center | Afternoon
In the afternoon, students will dive into interactive STEM activities at the Carnegie Science Center. Highlights include:
- RoboWorld – Pittsburgh’s role in robotics innovation, featuring hands-on programming challenges and artificial intelligence experiments.
- The USS Requin Submarine – A real WWII-era submarine where students learn about naval engineering, sonar technology, and physics in underwater environments.
- BodyWorks – A live science demonstration on human biology, exploring biomechanics, neuroscience, and medical advancements.
Day 2: Wildlife and Environmental Science
Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium
A full day of biological exploration awaits at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. Students will participate in specialized programs focused on zoology, marine biology, and conservation efforts. Activities may include:
- Animal Adaptations – Understanding how different species have evolved to survive in their habitats.
- Aquatic Ecosystems – Exploring marine conservation efforts and the impact of human activity on ocean life.
- Behind-the-Scenes Veterinary Science – Learning how zoo veterinarians use medical technology to care for animals.
Day 3: Sustainability and the Arts
Morning | Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens
At Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, students will discover the intersection of botany, environmental science, and sustainable architecture. The LEED-certified greenhouses showcase innovations in renewable energy, water conservation, and climate change research. Highlights include:
- The Tropical Rainforest Exhibit – Exploring biodiversity, photosynthesis, and ecosystems
- Sustainable Greenhouse Design – Learning about solar power, water recycling, and energy-efficient agriculture.
- Pollination Science – Understanding the role of bees and butterflies in food production.
Afternoon | Pittsburgh Cultural District Matinee Show
Wrap up the trip with a performing arts experience in Pittsburgh’s vibrant Cultural District. A matinee show offers students insight into theatrical production, stage engineering, and the artistic aspects of storytelling. Pre- or post-show discussions may focus on:
- Lighting and Set Design – The physics of sound, light, and stage mechanics.
- Music and Acoustics – Exploring the science behind sound waves and performance spaces.
- Careers in the Arts – How STEAM fields contribute to live entertainment, from digital projections to costume design.
