Penguins’ Playoff Run Means Big Economic Boost For Region

To recognize team's success, VisitPITTSBURGH to change its name to VisitPENSBURGH

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania - VisitPITTSBURGH today announced that every Pittsburgh Penguins home game during the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs meant an estimated $4.3 million in total spending for Allegheny County, and that number could grow for third round home games. In addition, the national media exposure that comes with the Penguins playing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs provides a tremendous opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh.

"What a great time for such a high quality organization and its players and fans, and we all congratulate the Pittsburgh Penguins for their outstanding year," said Craig Davis, President and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH. "While it has been exciting to watch the team during the playoffs, the Penguins have given our region more than just great hockey. They generate a significant impact for our local economy, and they will continue to do so during this fabulous playoff run."

To celebrate the Penguins success, the official tourism marketing and promotion agency of the Pittsburgh region will unofficially change its name to VisitPENSBURGH beginning today.

Davis said that in return for all that the Pittsburgh Penguins organization has done for the region, VisitPITTSBURGH wants to join other Pittsburghers in raising awareness for the Penguins success by changing its name to VisitPENSBURGH. The change will be visible on signage at the organization’s office and visitors centers and on its website, and staff will begin answering the phone "VisitPENSBURGH, formerly VisitPITTSBURGH."

"We just want to express our pride in our team and to thank the Penguins for helping us promote our city and region," said Davis. "We could not afford to pay for the advertising that equates to the television exposure for our city during the playoffs. In addition, while Pittsburgh has always been known as a legendary sports town, the success of the Penguins, Steelers and Pirates, along with our other professional and collegiate teams, helps us to promote Pittsburgh as a major sports destination for other sports events."

VisitPITTSBURGH is the official tourism marketing and promotion agency of the Pittsburgh region. It is dedicated to generating convention, trade show and leisure travel business for the Pittsburgh region.
