Online “Chair-ity” Auction Extended

VisitPITTSBURGH’s popular 90 Painted Chairs Program online “chair-ity” auction has been extended to May 15.

The auction launched Feb. 25 in partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (GPAC). To date, bids have been cast for 76 percent of the lot of chairs.

An offshoot of VisitPITTSBURGH’s award-winning Pull Up a Chair. You are Welcomed Here. national marketing campaign, the 90 Painted Chairs Program invited local artists to paint parking chairs for a “chair-ity.” More than 90 chairs are available for auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Art Council’s newest professional network– the Teaching Artist Initiative.

“During these uncertain times, it’s very important that we continue to take care of Pittsburghers. The arts and culture community is a point of pride for our city, and we are happy to extend the online auction and to further assist the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and its Teaching Artists Initiative,” VisitPITTSBURGH Chief Marketing Officer Tom Loftus said. “The ‘chair-ity’ auction received a tremendous response when it was launched in February, and these brilliantly designed chairs have garnered a lot of praise.

“The artists have been wonderful Pittsburgh ambassadors, and I thank them for continuing to spread Pittsburgh’s welcoming message.”

The Teaching Artist Initiative is a peer network where teaching artists connect for networking, professional development and peer-to-peer learning. The initiative was developed in response to a need from local teaching artists who have historically had fewer opportunities to connect as a group of working professionals than others in the education or arts sectors. With teaching listed as the top source of income for Pittsburgh artists, GPAC hopes the initiative will fill this gap in learning with education and professional development.

“The resources, networking and camaraderie available through our Teaching Artist Initiative will be even more vital for our arts community in the post-coronavirus days to come,” Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council CEO Mitch Swain said. “We’re grateful to VisitPITTSBURGH for continuing to support this initiative and extending the auction deadline.”

Interested parties can view and bid on all 90+ chairs at The auction will close on May 15 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
