Event to Celebrate the Incline's 135th Anniversary and Grand Opening of Center
PITTSBURGH – The Duquesne Incline and VisitPittsburgh have joined forces to celebrate the 135th Anniversary of the popular tourist attraction and the Grand Opening of the new Pittsburgh Welcome Center. The incline served a record 500,000 rides in 2011, eighty percent of which rode it for recreation.
"Every article written about Pittsburgh and every photo of the Pittsburgh skyline highlights the beautiful view provided by and the popularity of the inclines," says Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh, the official tourism and promotion agency for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. "The Duquesne Incline is a non-profit museum that interprets the history of inclines and of Pittsburgh and is a feather in our cap when promoting the region to travelers and tourists." Inclines are often considered "first-day attractions" because they are unique to Pittsburgh.
It is for this reason that VisitPittsburgh has located its fourth Pittsburgh Welcome Center at the top level of the Incline. "The Duquesne Incline has traditionally been a very strong partner of VisitPittsburgh," says Tom Reinheimer, director of marketing for the Duquesne Incline. "We handle visitor questions and have an information booth and souvenir shop there to serve visitors. Now, we have an official VisitPittsburgh Welcome Center that will be even more helpful to travelers." The Incline joins VisitPittsburgh's other three welcome centers: Downtown at Fifth Ave Place, landside terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport and at the Senator John Heinz History Center.
