Pittsburgh to host Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon; National Catholic Education Association & Communications Workers of America to Meet in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH – Several important convention and event announcements were made at VisitPittsburgh’s Annual Meeting this morning. The National Catholic Education Association and the Communications Workers of America will hold upcoming conventions in Pittsburgh, thanks to efforts of VisitPittsburgh. The Rock ‘n Roll Marathon Series comes to Pittsburgh for the next three years beginning in August 2013.
VisitPittsburgh also announced that it has booked a series of Marcellus Shale-related conference and meetings through 2014. The aggregate amount of direct spending on these conferences from 2009 through 2014 is estimated at more than $35 million.
The Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon will draw about 12,000 people to the Aug. 2-4, 2013 event. This unique event melds the excitement of a rock concert into an endurance event, infused with live bands performing at every mile along the course. After completing the race, participants join their friends and families to celebrate with a Finish Line Festival featuring a headliner concert. Past performers include the Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows, Chris Isaak and Chicago. A two-day Health and Fitness Expo straddles the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon weekend and offers exciting activities for participants and their supporters.
The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon event will generate more than $7.9 million in direct spending in the region in 2013. And, it will be returning Aug. 1-3, 2014.
Also in 2013, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) will hold their Annual Convention in Pittsburgh. CWA is the largest telecommunications union in the world, with members working in telecommunications, broadcasting, cable TV, journalism, publishing, manufacturing, airlines, customer service, government service, health care, education and other fields.
About 2,000 members will attend the 2013 CWA Annual Convention, April 19-23, 2013.
The National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) will hold its Convention & Expo in Pittsburgh, April 22-24, 2014. NCEA is the largest private professional education organization in the world, representing 200,000 Catholic educators who serve 7.6 million students in Catholic elementary and secondary schools, in religious education programs in seminaries and in colleges and universities.
The NCEA Convention & Expo will attract 8,500 attendees and generate nearly $7 million in direct spending to the Pittsburgh region.
Together, these groups represent $27 million in direct spending to the region. This includes $1.4 million in sales tax, nearly $144,000 in RAD tax and $757,000 in hotel taxes.
VisitPittsburgh is the official tourism marketing and promotion agency of the Pittsburgh region. The organization is dedicated to generating conventions, trade show and leisure travel business for the Pittsburgh region.
