Bigger, Better and More Beautiful than Ever, 2013 Official Visitors Guide to Pittsburgh Hits the Streets
PITTSBURGH – It's Pittsburgh like you’ve never seen it before. At least in print.
The 2013 Official Visitors Guide to Pittsburgh is hot off the press and stands ready to entice visitors to the City of Bridges. The striking cover photo on the annual guide features the city skyline in its full splendor. But, wait... there's more!
In what is a first in VisitPittsburgh's history of creating visitors' guides, the 2013 Guide features double fold-out, front-and-back covers that present a panoramic shot of Pittsburgh’s iconic skyline.
"They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this panorama of Pittsburgh truly tells the story of our breathtakingly beautiful city," said Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh. "We're extremely proud of what we've done with this publication and we're confident that we'll have a very positive reaction from prospective meeting planners and visitors when they see it."
Local photographer Roy Engelbrecht shot the image from the West End Overlook at dusk in October, and it includes a stunning view of downtown Pittsburgh. "This is the shot of The Point and our three rivers that distinguishes Pittsburgh from every other U.S. city," said Mr. Davis. "This is the money shot – and one that attracts even more visitors to our city."
In this panorama, recognizable attractions include Rivers Casino, Heinz Field, the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Cathedral of Learning, PPG Place and Point State Park. Before embarking on the production of this year's Visitors Guide, VisitPittsburgh surveyed visitors and partners to gain insight into the attractiveness and usability of the guide, while gauging feedback on cover images. The overall sentiment expressed was to use a skyline photo on the cover. VisitPittsburgh opted to take it one step further by creating a four-panel, poster-size homage to Pittsburgh.
But great photography didn’t stop at the cover. The 100-page guide also features numerous photos by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Martha Rial. In addition, some photos were obtained through a VisitPittsburgh photo contest held last year.
The user-friendly guide also highlights the importance of water to our region and features all of the necessary components for a great Pittsburgh experience. There are extensive details on fun things to see and do, accommodations, dining, nightlife, shopping, maps and event listings. Numerous neighborhoods are profiled, too, in an effort to highlight authentic Pittsburgh experiences – something else our survey indicated that would be beneficial to tourists. In addition to Downtown, five other neighborhoods are showcased, including Sewickley, Strip District, Shadyside, Lawrenceville and the North Shore.
The book was designed by ocreations, LLC , and printed by RR Donnelley Printing. The 2013 Official Visitors Guide to Pittsburgh made its debut at a Launch Party that coincided with a VisitPittsburgh Primetime networking event at Sheraton Station Square Hotel on Tues., Feb. 12. About 100 people attended the Launch Party that was sponsored by Huntington Bank. The band, 2 Turntables and a Saxophone, provided entertainment.

Or, visitors may pick one up at the WELCOME Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop in Fifth Avenue Place in Downtown Pittsburgh, the VisitPittsburgh Welcome Center at the Heinz History Center and Pittsburgh International Airport and the Welcome Center at the Duquesne Incline on Mt. Washington. The guide will soon be available for download at visitpittsburgh.com.
