Know Before You Go: Arrival & Getting Around

Welcome to the Steel City! Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for AISTech 2026, navigating Pittsburgh is simpler than you might think. From the moment you land to your first stroll through the Golden Triangle, here is what you need to know.

Arriving by Air: The New Pittsburgh International Airport

You will be among the first major conference groups to experience the newly opened terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Designed to reflect the rolling hills and glass-and-steel heritage of our region, the new facility has completely streamlined the arrival process.

Getting to Downtown, the airport is approximately 20 miles west of Downtown.

  • Rideshare/Taxi: Uber and Lyft are readily available; follow signs to the designated pickup zone outside Baggage Claim. A typical trip takes 25–35 minutes depending on traffic.
  • The 28X Airport Flyer: This express bus remains a popular, budget-friendly option. It runs every 30 minutes and drops off within steps of the Convention Center and major hotels.
    • Download the PRT Ready2Ride app before traveling for easy mobile ticketing that can be used throughout your stay in Pittsburgh.

Arriving by Car

Driving into Pittsburgh offers one of the best "reveal" views in the country, but the downtown grid requires a little strategy.

  • The "Fort Pitt Tunnel" Entrance: If you are driving from the South or the Airport (I-376 E), be prepared for the iconic view of the skyline as you exit the tunnel. Stay in the left lane through the tunnel and as you cross the bridge to exit directly onto Ft. Duquesne Blvd toward the Convention Center.
  • Parking Made Easy: While many hotels offer valet, you can find real-time parking availability at ParkPGH.org.
    • The DLCC Garage: Located directly under the Convention Center (entrance on 10th St).
    • Smithfield-Liberty Garage: A large, central city garage just a 4-minute walk from the DLCC.

Pro Tip: Downtown is a "walker's paradise," and our free transit options mean you won't need your car until it's time to head home.

Packing for Success: The "Walkable City"

Pittsburgh is a "city of neighborhoods," and the best way to see them is on foot.

Comfortable Shoes are Essential: You’ll be logging miles on the AISTech exhibit floor, but you’ll also want to explore the Strip District’s vibrant sidewalks and the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Bring shoes that can handle both the convention carpet and the city pavement.

Layer Up: May in Pittsburgh is beautiful, but river breezes can be brisk. Pack a light jacket for evenings and walking along the riverfront trails.

Prepare for "Steel City" Skies: Early May often brings passing spring showers. Pack a compact travel umbrella or a lightweight, packable rain shell so you can keep exploring without having to head back to the hotel to dry off.
