This year's EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will reach new heights when Red Bull Flugtag makes its Pittsburgh debut. Flugtag, which means "flying day" in German, is taking place August 5 on the North Shore Great Lawn. Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines. Forty teams of five have been chosen to attempt to fly their design off of a 22-foot high flight deck into the Allegheny River. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft and showmanship.
Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 100 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event. To date, no craft has flown more than 258 feet, a record set by a group called The Chicken Whisperers on Sept. 21, 2013 in Long Beach, CA.
The champion team from last summer's flugtag in Boston, Mass. is back in the competition this year to challenge Pittsburgh's best and brightest -- from "The Peng-Wings" to "I.C. Flight Crew".
You can even scope out the wanna-be pilots and their homemade flying crafts before the competition at the Red Bull Flugtag Open Hangar. Teams will be in "full costumes and with all the feels" by Saturday morning at 10am on Art Rooney Way across from the flight deck. In true meet-and-greet style, wish them luck, shake hands or take photos with these maybe-celebrities before they make their maiden voyages into the Allegheny.
