This year's EQT Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta will reach new heights when Red Bull Flugtag makes its Pittsburgh debut. Flugtag, which means "flying day in German, is taking place on the North Shore Great Lawn on August 5th. Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot home-made flying machines. Forty teams of five have been chosen to attempt to fly their design off of a 22-foot high flight deck into the Allegheny River. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship.
Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 100 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event. To date, no craft has flown more than 258 feet, a record set by a group called The Chicken Whisperers on Sept. 21, 2013 in Long Beach, CA. Visit www.redbullflugtag.com for more information.
