Turning 21 in Pittsburgh has taught me that there's a lot more 21 and over-esque activities than just the typical bar scene.
It's not to say that Pittsburgh's bar scene isn't amazing (because it is), but with so many of Pittsburgh's signature attractions now hosting unique reoccurring 21 and older events, the "bar' has been raised. With extraordinary venues and creative entertainment, the only problem is picking which event to attend. Check out my list of the Top Ten 21+ Events in Pittsburgh below.
Gather monthly in Phipps's Tropical Forest Conservatory and party like you're really in the tropics. The lush garden provides the perfect backdrop for the party, which includes a DJ, signature cocktails, and delicious small bites. Best of all, the event is free with regular Phipps admission so guests can explore the entire conservatory.
Relive your childhood at the Carnegie Science Center. This late night event closes the center to anyone under the age of 21 and lets you enjoy all the features of the Science Center and then some! The reoccurring event features a different science theme each month, like Food Science with Wigle Whiskey (March) and Sci Fi (April). All of the typical exhibitions are open for exploration and there are special events to center around the theme like live shows, demonstrations, screenings, samples, crafts, and of course, unique cocktails.
While this one's not specifically 21 and older, it has all the makings of 21 and older event. On the third Thursday of every month, the Carnegie Museum of Art stays open late with a special menu, drinks, entertainment, and events. CMOA teams up with local partners to create unique entertainment, like games centering on the art collections, dancing to the beats of a DJ in the Hall of Sculpture, specialized tours, and more that all center around the theme.
With a different theme for each After Dark event, this 21 and older event opens up the Carnegie Museum of Natural History - you guessed it - after dark and features live music, entertainment, beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres. Plus, how many other places can you enjoy a drink amidst dinosaur bones?
Arts and crafts aren't just for kids with this adult night. This quarterly 21 and older night lets adults take over the MakeShop with drinks, food, and crafts. Enjoy a different adult themed make-and-take each time like including shot glass etching, crayon molding, adult themed Valentine's cards, and more.
Every Friday the Warhol Museum, a.k.a. The Global Keeper of Andy Warhol's legacy, is open late until ten with half-off admission starting at 5 pm. While this event isn't strictly 21 and older, there's a cash bar in the lobby and all 7 floors of the museum are open for exploration. The 21+ crowd will love enjoying a drink while paying homage to Pittsburgh's iconic pop art icon in the modern setting.
Technology geeks will rejoice over this technical happy hour. Pittsburgh's TechShop will be open to both members and non-members for a very unique social happy hour. This event reoccurs the first Friday of each month and features live demonstrations of 3D printing and blacksmithing, giant games, entertainment, and local brews. Afterwards, check out Penn Ave Unblurred, an arts event that opens up businesses on Penn Ave for different events like live music, a variety of arts performances, tours, and more.
Rooftop Shindig is an all ages event but the signature cocktails and unique entertainment make it perfect for the 21 and older crowd. Summer exclusive from June – September, each event features a party on the roof of the Theater Square Garage, making for the perfect urban atmosphere. Entertainment includes a movie screening, live music, giant games, and vendors with specialty cocktails and beer, as well as handcrafted foods!
The title says it all - art is on tap at The Westmoreland's monthly happy hour the second Friday of each month. From 5 pm – 7 pm, explore The Westmoreland's expansive art collection while enjoying live music, an art scavenger hunt, food from Sun Dawg Cafe, and drinks, including beer from local brewery All Saints Brewing Company.
Learn, craft, and brag with Crafts and Drafts at the Society for Contemporary Craft. Each session will feature a different craft paired with local craft beers, and you'll learn a new skill each time depending on the creation. Don't stress over the incredible skills you'll learn, they're all beginner friendly and brag worthy. Your ticket purchase includes the necessary materials and two complimentary drinks.
