Memorial Day is widely seen as the kick-off to a few months of fun in the sun, but even more importantly it's a time to remember those who died in active military service. If you're spending Memorial Day weekend in Pittsburgh, here's how you can pay your respects and have some family fun.
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Memorial Day Celebration
Enjoy patriotic, family-oriented Memorial Day festivities at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall, including activities for the kids like a bouncy castle and face painting. The celebration will kick off at 11 am Monday, May 29 with a special ceremony for fallen Pennsylvania service members from the War on Terrorism and close with a musical tribute from The Brass Roots at 4 pm.
Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade
Grab a slice of classic Americana at Lawrenceville's 109th annual Memorial Day Parade, featuring marching bands, veterans' organizations, dogs, classic cars, local sports mascots and more. The parade kicks off at 10 am Monday, May 29 at the intersection of 40th and Butler Streets and will last about 45 minutes.
Allegheny Cemetery Memorial Ceremony & Activities
Following the parade, it's just a hop, skip and a jump over to Allegheny Cemetery for a Tribute Service at the Soldiers Memorial, including patriotic music, a 21-gun salute and a dove release. The week before the parade, volunteers place thousands of flags at soldiers' graves for the ceremony. For the kids, check out face painting and music – or cool off with a dip in the fountain! Car enthusiasts won't be able to contain their excitement during the Classic & Antique Car Show from 12:30-2:30 pm.
Visit a Memorial
Memorial Day is the perfect time to visit one of Pittsburgh's many memorials and monuments. You can visit the Korean War Memorial, Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial, World War II Memorial, Tribute to Children Memorial, and Vietnam Veterans' Monument downtown, or make the drive to the Flight 93 National Memorial.
America's Favorite Pastime at PNC Park
What's more American than heading to a good old-fashioned baseball game?
