It's no secret that Pittsburgh is a hub for fresh and local food.
We have a multitude of local farms that allow you to pick your own food, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs, and farm fresh meats. However, in the summertime, Pittsburgh becomes even more "green" with the eagerly anticipated rise of farmers' markets! There are over 170 farmers' markets in our regional area, with almost 60 available in Allegheny County alone. I'm going to cover just a few, but be sure to check out the interactive map and listing that the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette maintains to find a market near you!
The annual Citiparks Farmers' Markets have returned to Pittsburgh for 2015. Markets are held weekly in eight city neighborhoods through November, and all markets sell farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese and baked goods. Some locations also have flowers, small gifts and gardening items for sale. One of my favorites - the North Side location - is open on Fridays from 3:30 pm - 7:30 pm at East Park (East Ohio Street and Cedar Avenue).
If you work downtown, summer Thursday afternoons mean only one thing...its time for the Downtown Farmers Market! Located in Market Square through October, 10 am - 2 pm every Thursday of the season, this is one of my favorite farmers' markets. If fresh fruits, veggies, delicious prepared foods, sweets and other treats aren't enough of a reason to stop by, these Thursday events are also paired with lunchtime concert series! I love spending my lunch hour in the Square listening to good music, enjoying fresh food, and watching the hustle and bustle of downtown workers taking a break to enjoy the sun and the city.
The only year round market in Pittsburgh is the Historic Public Market in the Strip District. Experience the sights, sounds and aromas of an old-world market district buzzing with shoppers, street vendors, and shops filled with food from our region and around the world. The Public Market is indoors and open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 10 am - 4 pm, Thursdays 10 am - 7 pm, and Saturdays 9 am - 5 pm. One of the great benefits of an indoor market is that it's rain or shine! There are great gourmet offerings here.
From June to October come and meet the farmers who grow your food! Farmers at Phipps is one of ony a few local farmers' markets dedicated to offering exclusively organic and certified naturally grown fruits, veggies, and more! During your visit you are also able to explore Phipps' outdoor gardens and sustainable plant beds, and you might as well buy a ticket to explore their Summer Flower Show!
One of my favorite local foodie magazines - Edible Allegheny - also has a great online directory to help you find a farm stand in your neighborhood. Now, if you'll excuse me, it's Thursday afternoon and I'm heading to the Downtown farmers' market for lunch!
