How Does Twitter Work?

Twitter allows people to communicate and stay connected with each other by exchanging information in short (140 characters or less), simple conversations called "tweets." People young and old all across the globe are using it to stay in touch with friends and family, keep tabs on celebrities, and follow updates from organizations and businesses. You can follow friends and other things of interest, and others may choose to keep up with what you are doing and “follow” you. Think of it as an ongoing web dialogue you can choose to observe or participate in, as long as your thoughts are brief!

Why Should I Follow Visit Pittsburgh?

Great question, why should you follow us? Let's say you are visiting an old friend in Pittsburgh and have a few hours to spend downtown while they are still at work. You can use Twitter to find out what to do:

  • Your Tweet: Where can I find a bookstore near the Mellon Arena? #vstpgh
  • Response: Try Bradley's Books on 5th Ave #vstpgh

Or, let's say you're spending a cozy Thursday night in Pittsburgh and wondering what to do, when voila, Visit Pittsburgh sends this tweet:
