Get your day started with a walk on the picturesque Greene River Trail with its view of the Mon River following a home-style breakfast at Laverne’s Restaurant in Jefferson, a favorite of locals.
While you are winding down from an exhilarating walk on the trail, stop by the W.A. Young Foundry for your private, prescheduled tour. This historic landmark was called “the greatest find in 100 years” by the curator emeritus of the Smithsonian Institute. Located along the Monongahela River in Rices Landing, the W.A. Young Foundry is the best example of what “American Made” really means. After your foundry tour, hop into your boat for a leisurely ride on the Mon, grab your fishing pole and reel in some lunch or take a short drive into the town of Dry Tavern for lunch at Italian Boys Restaurant. If you’d rather not have to drive, enjoy a picnic lunch on the lock wall. Then skip on over to the Rices Landing Borough Building where the Lock 6 Museum is located to view images of the heyday of the trade traffic of the Mon River in this town.
Cap off your day with a steak dinner at Caputo’s family restaurant in Dry Tavern before retiring in the relaxed atmosphere of the Riverview Escape, a 1920s eclectically furnished guesthouse that overlooks the Greene River Trail. Lighter fare is available at the Escape, with prior arrangements. The possibilities are endless in Greene County, with communities steeped in tradition peppered all across the “Cornerstone of the Keystone State.”
Waynesburg offeres a number of accommodations for your group. For the more adventurous, try a cabin, state park or a campground in the countryside.
