The Pittsburgh Public School District is the largest in Allegheny County serving approximately 38,000 pupils throughout Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver. The facilities include high schools (Grades 9 - 12), alternative programs and special use schools, middle schools (Grades 6 - 8) and elementary schools (Grades K-8 and K-5). Assignments to schools are based on the address of the child's legal residence. Also, the district's Magnet Schools provide students the opportunity through voluntary enrollment to pursue special interests, talents or career goals.
The remaining 42 school districts in Allegheny County are listed at the website of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 3. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh also maintains a listing of other districts in surrounding counties. Check out Pittsburgh Magazine's City Guide for additional information.

The sixth annual Report Card for schools that teach 5th graders in Southwestern Pennsylvania is produced by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development, with the assistance of its affiliate, the Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The report tells you how well 5th grade students are able to read and do mathematics in each of the schools in our region based on the 5th grade Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) results. The report is designed to provide parents and citizens with easy-to-understand information in order to encourage improvement in student proficiency.
