PITTSBURGH – The eyes of the travel industry will be focused on Pittsburgh next week, as VisitPittsburgh has the honor of hosting a joint chapter meeting of the Society of American Travel Writers. Two chapters of this prestigious group, which is comprised of vetted and accomplished travel writers and public relations professionals, will meet in Pittsburgh, June 26 – June 29, 2011. The SATW Northeast Chapter and the SATW Atlantic Caribbean Chapter will meet jointly for the first time, bringing 80 travel professionals to Pittsburgh.

VisitPittsburgh, the county’s official tourism agency, in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Steelers, estimates that Sunday’s AFC Championship game at Heinz Field against the New York Jets will result in $22.9 million in direct spending to the local economy. Since 2005, the NFL Playoffs have brought in a grand total of over $108 million. Yes – that’s $108 million in direct spending!

PITTSBURGH – In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration this month, VisitPittsburgh and local hotels, businesses and organizations are participating in the 2011 MLK Hospitality Food Drive. The annual food drive, which runs through January 31, benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The 2011 goal is to collect 6,000 lbs. of food to assist the thousands of families and individuals who are experiencing hardships.
