The Nosh Tour

Located in the East End Suburbs, Oakmont Bakery is a must-stop. Take a number and wait - it'll be well worth it! You will find everything from pepperoni bread to cupcakes at Oakmont Bakery. Go for the Gobs and cupcakes, and find some unique options, including an Elvis peanut butter and banana cupcakes, the Orange Creamsicle cupcake. Mmmm and homemade Snoballs - you know the round cakes covered in coconut with cream filling? They're as big as softballs, but taste much better!

Next head over to Oakland to Essie’s Original Hot Dog Shop or "The O" – as locals call it. On the side of whatever hotdog suites your taste, you must get French Fries, Big O fries are legendary, crisp and dark golde with a wicked crunch that makes them such a good companion for just about any sandwich. Even a small order, for about two-and-a-half dollars, is a substantial dish; but you can get them in sizes all the way up to Extra Large (currently $7.24) for a plentiful potato orgy. Although cheese for dipping is available, as are gravy, hot sauce, and ranch dressing, these exquisite potatoes need only a sprinkle of salt.

Yes, it's true that Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield is home to Pittsburgh's Little Italy. But the neighborhood can satisfy your other culinary cravings, too. The Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, visible from the Bloomfield Bridge, is a bastion of Polish pride. Your cultural immersion begins in the parking lot where you can see a huge mural decorated with tributes to Polish heroes. Inside the BBT (as it's known by locals), you’ll find a wide selection of Polish comfort food, such as pierogies, haluski and duck soup.

And it wouldn't be a trip to Pittsburgh without stopping by the world-famous Primanti Brothers! The signature sandwich stuffs sizzling meat, melted cheese, hand-cut French fries, tomatoes and coleslaw between two big slices of crusty Italian bread. Fast, friendly and a true Pittsburgh original, Primanti's is the place to go when you're more than a little hungry.

The South Side's Twisted Treasure: pretzel sandwiches from the Pittsburgh Pretzel Shop is one of the Tastiest $3-and-under lunches you can get in the city. There's no place to sit, so get a bag of pretzels to go., make sure to get the one you plan on eating heated up, or ask for it right from the oven if you get there early in the morning!
