St. Matthews A.M.E. Zion Church

Brief History

Founded on Thorn and Walnut Streets as a frame church, St. Matthews congregation later erected a brick building on the site in the late 1880s. First established in 1885 by six runaway slaves in search of freedom, it was ultimately chartered in 1903.
