Join artist and architect Sylvester Damianos for a gallery talk in his joint exhibition Opposites Attract. Syl will share his approach to using natural materials in the construction of his contemporary wall sculptures. Whether formed into rigid geometric shapes or sculpted into purely organic forms, his work is informed by the play of light on the surface of the work and exposing the natural beauty of the materials. Born above his father’s restaurant in McKeesport, PA, Syl Damianos expected to follow his siblings into their father’s business. A chance acceptance into the architecture program at Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) followed by a Fulbright Scholarship to the Technilogical Institute of Delft, Netherlands launched a career as both an accomplished architect and artist. Now the President of Damianosgroup he has served in numerous positions within the American Institute of Architects including President of the Pittsburgh Chapter. He has been active in the region’s arts community serving on the boards of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Society for Contemporary Craft, and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. His award winning work is in the collection of many of the region’s corporations.
