Local and national headlines continually highlight theaters making gross errors in judgement in casting their productions, and issues surrounding authorial intent and whitewashing are at the forefront of the discussion. What’s at the root of the problem? What practical steps can the theater community in Pittsburgh take to avoid whitewashing of productions and, in general, to invite a more diverse group of artists into the process? The Dramatists Guild in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Theatre Arts, Bricolage Production Company, GPAC, Indiana University of Pennsylvania Department of Theater and Dance, and established performers, writers, and directors will host a Town Hall to address these issues. Author’s rights, representation, racial justice in theatre, and the consequences of cultural appropriation will be covered in the discussion. The event will include a panel, facilitated by Diep Tran, journalist and associate editor at American Theatre magazine, interactive break-out sessions led by Diep and Reginald Douglas, director/producer and City Theatre Artistic Producer, and a chance to come together to share our tools and resources. A full list of panelists and the agenda can be accessed on the event page: http://www.pittsburghartscouncil.org/events-and-workshops-etc/gpacevents/event/475
