Factory Direct: Pittsburgh showcases the artwork of 14 established contemporary artists invited to conduct artist residencies in Pittsburgh-based factories. Factory Direct artists will work closely with the management teams and factory workers within their host facilities to plan and execute a new work of art based on the factory’s history, technologies, materials, and/or processes.

The sixteenth installment in the Gestures series, Gestures: Intimate Friction, will bring together artists, architects, and activists to work together in the Mattress Factory’s annex gallery, 1414 Monterey. The upcoming exhibition will be guest-curated by Mary-Lou Arscott, of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture.

\Explore the history of the guitar like never before - through science! Guitar: The Instrument that Rocked the World combines science, sound, history and the cultural impact of the guitar into this exciting new exhibit.

This exhibit features a showcase of more than 60 guitars, ranging from the rare to wildly popular. It includes interactives about the science of sound as well as photography, performance videos, audio, touch screens and the World’s Largest Playable Guitar, certified by Guinness World Records. Plus, live performances by musicians of local, regional, and national note will be scheduled throughout the run of the exhibit.

The Warhol celebrates Andy Warhol’s work in film and video with the inauguration of a long-term exhibition showcasing the largest installation of his media works. Warhol’s most important films, including The Chelsea Girls (1966) and Screen Tests (1964-66), will be continuously projected on more than 20 large screens. Impressionism in a New Light: From Monet to Stieglitz, on view at Carnegie Museum of Art May 12–August 26, 2012, presents a robust picture of what Impressionism means in art, displaying paintings, drawings, prints, and pastels by major artists alongside works by many of the most famous Pictorialist photographers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
