The Carrie Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark, were the heart and soul of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works. The Carrie Furnaces Hard Hat Tour includes the whole steel-making process, from the Ore Yard where raw materials were stored, to the Cast House, where red hot molten metal spewed from the furnace. The sixteenth installment in the Gestures series, Gestures: Intimate Friction, will bring together artists, architects, and activists to work together in the Mattress Factory’s annex gallery, 1414 Monterey. The upcoming exhibition will be guest-curated by Mary-Lou Arscott, of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture.

This exhibit features a showcase of more than 60 guitars, ranging from the rare to wildly popular. It includes interactives about the science of sound as well as photography, performance videos, audio, touch screens and the World’s Largest Playable Guitar, certified by Guinness World Records. Plus, live performances by musicians of local, regional, and national note will be scheduled throughout the run of the exhibit.
