The Carrie Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark, were the heart and soul of U.S. Steel's Homestead Works. The Carrie Furnaces Hard Hat Tour includes the whole steel-making process, from the Ore Yard where raw materials were stored, to the Cast House, where red hot molten metal spewed from the furnace. Factory Direct: Pittsburgh showcases the artwork of 14 established contemporary artists invited to conduct artist residencies in Pittsburgh-based factories. Factory Direct artists will work closely with the management teams and factory workers within their host facilities to plan and execute a new work of art based on the factory’s history, technologies, materials, and/or processes.
