MLK Community Mural Project

Full of vibrant colors and deep with meaning, the Moving the Lives of Kids (MLK) Community Mural Project art murals are a must-see for both visitors and residents of Pittsburgh. Like hidden gems around the city, these breathtaking works of art tell unique stories that uplift the community.

The most moving aspect of this project is that it thrives on community involvement. Each mural is done with a staff member, an artist/designer of the piece and a group of inner-city students. The organization aims to inspire interest in city youth in the arts and their communities. To date they have succeeded in creating over 200 of these magnificent murals throughout Pittsburgh.

On the Port Authority East Bus Way line, these dynamic paintings adorn the walls of bus stops with bright colors and images full of hope and strength. In Wilkinsburg, a gazebo floor is covered with mosaic-like tile and the surrounding walls are covered with a collage of brilliant paintings that livens the area with positive energy.

Many of the students that work with the organization are considered “at risk” and have troubled home lives. “We have a great opportunity to reach them on a personal level and give them hope and confidence,” said Kyle Holbrook, Founder and CEO of the M.L.K. Community Mural Project.

In 2009, nearly 150 Pittsburgh students were selected from over 1,500 applicants to participate in this exciting project that continues to sweep the city. Mural paintings can be found right in Downtown as well as in neighborhoods like the Strip District, East Liberty and Manchester.
