  • South Side Mid-Winter Soup Contest

Butternut Bourbon Bisque, Bacon Bleu Cheese and Apple and Chipotle Chicken Chorizo are just a few of the soups you might find entered in the South Side Mid-Winter Soup Contest, an annual contest that warms the heart—and belly. The event, which takes place every February, benefits a local food pantry. It allows shoppers in Pittsburgh's funky South Side neighborhood to sample soups from 20 local restaurants for $5, plus at least one can of soup or other non-perishable food item. More than 1,200 people slurped and shopped in last year's "Soup Hop."

  • Step Trek

This vertical tour of the South Side Slopes to Mt. Washington neighborhoods is an annual event that takes place every October. Walkers will enjoy many features as they tour—at their own pace—approximately 2,700 steps and the intertwining streets and sidewalks that connect them. StepTrek takes walkers along the largest concentration of public steps of any neighborhood in Pittsburgh, and possibly the United States.
