Blairsville

The Blairsville Area Underground Railroad Project is dedicated to the memory of the area men and women who joined in the Underground Railroad Movement of pre-Civil War America. To that end, the Project has set itself the tasks of educating the public regarding the Underground Railroad in general and local involvement in particular; researching, documenting, and preserving area history developing presentations, living history narratives, and other materials to advance public awareness; and creating a museum to showcase and exhibit area Underground Railroad-related material. One of the many Underground Railroad routes in Western Pennsylvania came in through Uniontown in Fayette County, then travelled through Blairsville along what is now Route 119, then north to Black Lick, Homer City, Indiana, Marion Center before continuing into Mercer, Venango and Erie Counties.

By appointment, the Project provides walking tours of both the town and the cemetery, showing UGRR-related sites. Also by appointment, two museums are available for your enjoyment: the Historical Society of Blairsville Area Museum and the Underground Railroad Museum.
