Food and fun just go together and, in Pittsburgh, food is often the reason for the fun. Each year, local towns, fire halls, churches, fraternal groups and clubs throw grand parties in honor of their favorite food or drink. Everyone is welcome to join the fun. Pittsburgh food festivals feature ethnic or traditional foods as well as the music, dance, crafts and culture that go along with each. Many of these festivals go on for days, even weeks, just to make certain everyone has a chance to enjoy them.
There are so many Greek food festivals in Pittsburgh that the sponsors put together an annual Greek Festival Guide to provide a complete listing of festival dates, locations and driving directions. While German Oktoberfest can be celebrated year round at Max's Allegheny Tavern on Pittsburgh's North Side or the Hofbrauhaus in the Pittsburgh Southside Works, purists may want to wait until the real Oktoberfest celebrations begin in, ...um...September, throughout the area. To round out the smorgasbord of ethnic food festivals, there are Italian, Irish, Scottish, Bulgarian, and Russian festivals featuring the favorite foods from each tradition. And the list doesn't end there, either.
As the nation's 4th largest apple producer, Pennsylvania has bushels of apple festivals including the National Apple Harvest Festival held annually near Gettysburg. With apple festivals in Hickory, Franklin, and Delmont, the Pittsburgh area knows how to celebrate this tasty sweet-tart fruit as well. Also a national leader in the production of maple syrup, the popular Pennsylvania Maple Festival is held every spring in Meyersdale, just south of Pittsburgh. As winter departs and the sap starts to run, mountains of pancakes, sausage and bacon are flooded with rivers of maple syrup in the fire hall, schools and churches of Meyersdale. This festival highlights the sugaring process from tapping to finished product; maple syrup and maple sugar candy. Finally, Bacchus himself would have added the Pittsburgh Wine Festival, The Pittsburgh Whiskey & Fine Spirits Festival and the Pittsburgh Brewfest to his social calendar - and you should, too!
