History + Heritage in Indiana County
Indiana County offers a step back in time, from the Amish Community of Smicksburg to the classic Hollywood magic of the Jimmy Stewart Museum. One of America's most beloved screen stars, Mr. Stewart also is one of Indiana's most famous son. The museum highlights his accomplishments in film, radio and television. His roles as military hero, civic leader, family man and world citizen are woven into the museum’s displays, film presentations and gallery talks.
Indiana County is home to four covered bridges constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The four bridges are Harmon, Trusal, Kintersburg and Thomas. The Thomas Covered Bridge is the only covered bridge in the county that remains opens to traffic. All four covered bridges are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Indiana County's historical sites include the Eliza Furnace, which is a National Register site regarded as one of Pennsylvania's best preserved iron furnaces. Dating from 1846, the Eliza Furnace is one of only a few iron furnaces remaining in the United States that still retains its original heat exchanger piping.
