As part of its contribution to the celebrations surrounding Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary, the FrickArt & HistoricalCenter presents the second of two exhibitions planned for 2008 examining the various ways the city has been depicted on paper by artists from the nineteenth century through the present. The exhibition A Panorama of Pittsburgh: Nineteenth-Century Printed Views and accompanying catalogue will provide an in-depth consideration of the history of printed views of Pittsburgh and printmaking in the city, leading to a better understanding of the story of the region as well as of the use of prints of cityscapes during the period. There have been no previous exhibitions that have studied this material systematically, using examples from private, public, corporate, and club collections in Pittsburgh, as well as institutions around the country. The accompanying catalogue will include an essay by guest curator, Christopher W. Lane and an extensive and scholarly catalogue listing of printed views of Pittsburgh. Guest curator Christopher W. Lane is an expert on antique prints, maps and books. He has written Impressions of Niagara, documenting the Charles Rand Penney Collection of over 700 printed images of Niagara Falls, curated an exhibition of the Penney Collection at the CastellaniArtGallery, and assisted in assembling an international touring exhibition drawn from that collection. Lane is also known for his basic guides to map and print collecting, including What Is A Print? and A Guide to Collecting Historical Prints, and appears regularly as the print and map expert on The Antiques Roadshow. This exhibition is organized by the FrickArt & HistoricalCenter.

On Saturday, July 12, 2008 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Old Economy Village will present, The Joy of Toys. Children of all ages, especially those young at heart, will delight in making and playing simple toys and games of long ago. No couch potatoes or video games to be found here, only individuals with a keen imagination and a great sense of fun!

Create rags dolls, pin wheels, a thaumatrope, a puppet theater, and a jumping jack, a paper marionette which has delighted children and adults for hundreds of years. What treasures will you find in the fishing pond or on a visit to the "Lady of the Lake"? Play with jumping jacks, wind-up tin toys and more.
Discover the hands-on das Kinderhaus, a child-sized re-creation of a 19th century Harmonist household. Venture back into 19th century life as children "prepare" a meal for their family on a small scale cast iron stove and serve dinner on redware platters. Parents will enjoy experiencing a bit of history with their children as they weave a table runner on a loom, dress as a Harmonist, stuff a straw mattress and relax after the day's exertions on a rope bed.
If all that isn't exciting enough, event activities are included in the cost of admission to the Village.
