Pittsburgh Pirates' Winning Season Scores Nearly $200 Million for Local Economy

PITTSBURGH - It's what fields of dreams are made of. During the Pittsburgh Pirates' 2013 winning season, nearly $200 million was generated for the local economy by ticket buyers. The estimate of over $199 million is an accumulation of the money generated through the Pirates 81 home games of regular season play.

This nearly $200 million figure encompasses local and out-of-town spending, and includes game-day ticket sales, concession-stand spending, hotel rooms, outside-the-park meals and retail sales, along with miscellaneous spending. The spending figure is derived from information provided by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, using VisitPITTSBURGH formulas that are based on industry standards to calculate overall spending habits of ticket purchasers.

"Our professional sports teams bring tremendous economic value to the city," said Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH. "There's simply no better place to watch Major League Baseball than in Pittsburgh at PNC Park. And, this year, Pirates Baseball has been wildly exciting for the city and for Pirates' fans everywhere."

It's also worth noting that 19 percent of PNC Park patrons this year have come from a distance of 100 miles or more.

And, it's no wonder that out-of-towners are coming to see baseball games at beautiful PNC Park. TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, ranks PNC Park as the best ballpark in the United States. "Perched along the Allegheny River, this renowned ballpark features spectacular sights of the Steel City skyline and the beautiful Clemente Bridge. A unique two-level ballpark that opened in 2001, PNC Park provides and intimate setting and spectacular views and sightlines from anywhere in the stadium." The ballpark has received similar accolades from Travel + Leisure magazine, Fox Sports and ABC News, among others.

VisitPITTSBURGH is working with the Pittsburgh Pirates to determine estimated direct spending for what playoff games could mean to the city.
