VisitPittsburgh Recognized as One of Pittsburgh's Healthiest Employers
PITTSBURGH — VisitPittsburgh, the official tourism promotion agency for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, was recognized today by the Pittsburgh Business Times as one of 2012 Healthiest Employers. The award was given by Healthiest Employers, a privately-held technology and data research company.
"There are well-documented business and productivity reasons to support a wellness program in the workplace," says Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh. "But the best reason is because it is the right thing to do."
2012 is the sixth year of VisitPittsburgh's wellness initiative, coined Fit for Six. The initiative encourages employees to strive to be healthy and active, as well as rewards employees for healthy decision making. Employees make a "Wellness Pledge," which includes visiting doctors for preventive exams and lifestyle improvement programs. "Employee well-being has become the new measure of success. This impact is measured in terms of lower health care costs, increased productivity, better work-life balance and enhanced employee engagement," says Mary Grasha Houpt, vice president, human resources. 77% of the staff at VisitPittsburgh participated in the 2011/2012 program.
The wellness data from July 2011 through March 2012 released in a report from Highmark showed that VisitPittsburgh earned a wellness score of 83.91, while the average industry book of business score was 78.49. The report also showed that VisitPittsburgh's productivity rating is at 91.17%, with only 8.83% productivity impairment. This is lower than their insurer's industry book of business impairment of 9.98%.
The Healthiest Employers award program honors organizations that are successful in creating healthy environments in the workplace and measures wellness in the workplace through an online assessment tool with six key categories.
This is the second consecutive year VisitPittsburgh has won this award. Also in 2011, VisitPittsburgh won the Best Practices Honor from the American Psychological Association and was a recipient of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association's Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award.
