VisitPITTSBURGH Leads Food Drive to honor Martin Luther King

PITTSBURGH – In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration this month, VisitPITTSBURGH has enlisted the support of local hotels, businesses and organizations to participate in the 11th annual MLK Hospitality Food Drive, while supplying supporting materials such as posters and a "tool kit" to help each organization coordinate their own drive.

The annual campaign, which runs through January 31, benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The 2014 goal is to collect 7,500 lbs. of food to assist the thousands of families and individuals who are experiencing hardships. Each person who donates will be entered into a raffle to win two round-trip tickets on Delta Airlines.

Donations are being collected at VisitPITTSBURGH's WELCOME Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop in Fifth Avenue Place and Two PPG Place. If you would rather provide your donation online, you can log onto: http://www.yougivegoods.com/drive.php?id=2396, shop for the food you would like to donate (at the same price you would pay at a grocery store) and the food will be delivered directly to the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

"The number of families in need has grown over the past years. It's important that our organization and our hospitality partners do what we can to help our neighbors and our communities. We are encouraging everyone to consider the hardships that many are facing and participate in this year’s food drive," said Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPITTSBURGH.

VisitPITTSBURGH has asked its hospitality partners to get involved in "The Campaign to End Hunger," a project that began in 2006 to create awareness about the problem of hunger in the Pittsburgh area. Participating organizations include Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh Airport, David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Westin Convention Center Hotel and the International Special Events Society. Last year, the Hospitality Food Drive contributed 2,086 pounds of food to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Sponsors include Fifth Avenue Place, Delta Airlines, Yellow Cab Co., as well as other VisitPITTSBURGH partners.

VisitPITTSBURGH is dedicated to generating convention, trade show and leisure travel
business for the Pittsburgh region.
