VisitPittsburgh Leads 2012 MLK Food Drive

PITTSBURGH - In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration this month, VisitPittsburgh and local hotels, businesses and organizations are participating in the 2012 MLK Hospitality Food Drive.

The annual food drive, which runs through January 31, benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The 2012 goal is to collect 8,000 lbs. of food to assist the thousands of families and individuals who are experiencing hardships.

"Unfortunately, the number of families in need has grown over the past year. It's important that our organization and our hospitality partners do what we can to help our neighbors and our communities. We are encouraging everyone who is able to consider the hardships that many are facing to participate in this year's food drive," said Joe McGrath, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh.

VisitPittsburgh is asking everyone to get involved in "The Campaign to End Hunger," a project that began in 2006 to create awareness about the problem of hunger in the Pittsburgh area. Last year, the Hospitality Food Drive contributed 7,621 pounds of food to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

Donations will be collected at VisitPittsburgh's WELCOME Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop in Fifth Avenue Place and at participating organizations.

Sponsors include Fifth Avenue Place, Greater Pittsburgh Hotel Association, Coldwell Banker, Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh Transportation Group, Yellow Cab Co., Primanti Bros., Moe's Southwest Grill, SKAL, as well as VisitPittsburgh partners.
