VisitPittsburgh Leads 10th Annual MLK Food Drive
PITTSBURGH – In recognition of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration this month, VisitPittsburgh has enlisted the support of local hotels, businesses and organizations to participate in the 10th annual MLK Hospitality Food Drive. VisitPittsburgh will supply supporting materials such as posters and a "tool kit" to help each organization coordinate their own drive.
The annual campaign, which runs through January 31, benefits the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The 2013 goal is to collect 10,000 lbs. of food to assist the thousands of families and individuals who are experiencing hardships. Each person who donates will be entered into a raffle to win two round-trip tickets on Delta Airlines.
"Unfortunately, the number of families in need has grown over the past year. It’s important that our organization and our hospitality partners do what we can to help our neighbors and our communities. We are encouraging everyone to consider the hardships that many are facing and participate in this year’s food drive," said Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh.
VisitPittsburgh is asking its hospitality partners to get involved in "The Campaign to End Hunger," a project that began in 2006 to create awareness about the problem of hunger in the Pittsburgh area. Participating organizations include Courtyard by Marriott Pittsburgh Airport, David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Westin Convention Center Hotel and the International Special Events Society. Last year, the Hospitality Food Drive contributed 4,023 pounds of food to the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Donations will be collected at VisitPittsburgh's WELCOME Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop in Fifth Avenue Place and at participating organizations. Sponsors include Fifth Avenue Place, Greater Pittsburgh Hotel Association, Giant Eagle, Pittsburgh Transportation Group, Yellow Cab Co., as well as VisitPittsburgh partners.
