PITTSBURGH—Today, VisitPITTSBURGH launched a social media contest—dubbed "The Pirate Find Contest"—to celebrate the Pittsburgh Pirates ongoing success and in preparation for the Major League Baseball playoffs.

With Bucs fever at an all-time high, VisitPITTSBURGH conjured up the spirit of fictitious Captain Penn Stanwix, a legendary 16th century pirate who was lost at sea. As part of The Pirate Find Contest, Captain Stanwix will roam the streets of Pittsburgh over the next five days; his exact location will be announced daily on VisitPITTSBURGH's website and through other social media.

The Pirate Find Contest begins today and runs through 6 p.m. on Friday, October 2. To enter, fans have to take a photo with Captain Stanwix and must Tweet it, or post it on Instagram or Facebook using #PirateFind and #LovePGH. "The contest is a fun way for us to recognize the Pirates ongoing success and to add to the positive buzz about our team and our city," said Tinsy Labrie, VisitPITTSBURGH's vice president of marketing.

The winner of The Pirate Find Contest will receive a Pirates Treasure, which includes Pittsburgh Pirates jerseys, hats, Jolly Roger flags and two tickets to the first Pirates home game that follows the regular season. The winner will be chosen randomly and announced via Twitter and posted on around noon on Monday, Oct. 5.

At today’s press briefing announcing the contest, Tom Loftus, VisitPITTSBURGH's vice president of communications, appeared along Labrie, Captain Stanwix and—because every pirate needs a parrot for a companion—"Mac" the Military Macaw, who was on loan from the National Aviary. Loftus thanked the Pirates organization for its ongoing success.

"The Pirates continue to help us promote the city with its incredibly talented baseball team and exciting, winning baseball at PNC Park, the best baseball park in America. Every nationally televised game means tremendous exposure for our city. And the Pirates and PNC Park draw fans from all over the country to our region. Last year’s Pirates Wild Card game against the San Francisco Giants resulted in direct spending in excess of $4.9 million."

Loftus continued: “We wish the Pirates continued success, and we send our best wishes and a speedy recovery to Jung Ho Kang, who is a tremendous role model here and for so many fans in Korea.”

To wish Kang a speedy recovery, an oversized Get Well card will be available to sign at the VisitPITTSBURGH Welcome Pittsburgh Information Center and Gift Shop, located on the first level of Fifth Avenue Place. The card includes get-well wishes in Korean to Kang and will be sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates organization next week. A second card for Pirates fans to sign will be travelling around the city with Captain Stanwix.

Captain Stanwix will be at the VisitPITTSBURGH welcome center in Fifth Avenue Place today through 1 p.m. His other appearances will be announced through clues each day on social media channels and on Follow us on Twitter @vstpgh and Instagram @visitpittsburgh.
