Pittsburgh is in the Green for Meeting Planners Attending
"Platinum is the New Green" Pittsburgh Familiarization Tour

PITTSBURGH – To demonstrate that Pittsburgh is an environmentally friendly, sustainable city, VisitPittsburgh hosted 10 meeting planners for a Green Pittsburgh familiarization (FAM) tour, Sept. 6-8.

"Pittsburgh's reputation as a hub of green movement continues to grow. And, it's important to showcase the city as a green and environmentally friendly city so that meeting planners – who are increasingly interested in hosting green meetings – come away with a positive impression of the city," said Craig Davis, VisitPittsburgh president and CEO.

Providing a meeting planner with the opportunity to experience the city first-hand is critical in the effort to bring conventions to Pittsburgh. Meeting planners are the professionals who begin the decision-making process in determining where associations and companies will hold meetings and conventions. "These FAM tours can result in significant bookings and promise a strong return on investment." As a result of these visits, more than 80 percent of meeting planners book business in Pittsburgh.

Among the organizations who attended the fam tour were: Theatre Historical Society of America, ConferenceDirect, German Studies Association, Rainbow Events, USA Fencing, American Medical Technologists and HelmsBriscoe.

In addition to tours of the David L. Lawrence Convention Center – and lunch on the rooftop – other highlights of the FAM included tours of Phipps Conservatory's new Center for Sustainable Landscapes, Carnegie Science Center's Highmark SportsWorks®, a Pittsburgh Pirates game at PNC Park, Jersey Boys production at the Benedum Center and a "Dine Around" featuring Market Square eateries.

VisitPittsburgh hosted the Green Pittsburgh FAM tour in conjunction with the local hospitality community. Hotel tours include the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center, Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel, Wyndham Grand Hotel, DoubleTree by Hilton & Suites Pittsburgh Downtown, Omni William Penn Hotel, Westin Convention Center Hotel, Fairmont Hotel and Sheraton Station Square Hotel.

VisitPittsburgh is a founding community partner of the Pittsburgh 2030 District, a new initiative aimed at reducing 50 percent reductions in energy, water and transportation emissions by the year 2030. To this end, participants in the Green Pittsburgh FAM walked and used public transportation throughout much of their visit to Pittsburgh.
